Singers know that taking care of their voice is part of the work. Whether preparing for a performance or recovering after one, a soothing cup of herbal tea is often part of the routine. For artists like Patti Smith, blends with peppermint and loquat are go-to staples for soothing the throat and supporting the lungs.
In fact, our peppermint & loquat tisane recipe was inspired by a well-known herbal TCM remedy used across centuries.
Proven through centuries
Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa, is a classic herbal syrup made with loquat leaf and honey, often used to relieve coughs and moisten the throat. Originally created during the Qing Dynasty, it’s been a trusted remedy for singers (Rihanna and BTS are rumored to be fans), performers (Jackie Chan), teachers, and speakers for over a century.
We drew inspiration from this remedy, combined it with further knowhow of traditional chinese medicine and herbs, and translated it into a light, delicious infusion that fits seamlessly into a modern self-care routine.
Why peppermint & loquat?
These two ingredients work in balance to calm and support the throat and lungs, especially during periods of vocal strain or dry seasonal shifts.

Supporting Herbs with Purpose
While peppermint and loquat leaf form the foundation of this tisane, we’ve thoughtfully layered in three additional ingredients — each one selected to support the body’s natural rhythm and to round out the blend with both depth and function.
Organic Ginger
Warming and gently invigorating, ginger has long been used in both Traditional Chinese and Western herbal practices to support circulation and soothe the digestive and respiratory systems. It helps:
-
Warm the body and clear internal cold
-
Support healthy circulation
-
Gently open the chest and ease tightness
Balloon Flower Root
A classic herb in Chinese respiratory formulas, balloon flower root is used to:
-
Help open the lungs and clear the throat
-
Support healthy expectoration (clearing phlegm)
-
Guide other herbs upward to the chest and throat
It’s often included in herbal remedies where voice and breath need support.
Organic Licorice Root
Known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a harmonizer, licorice root balances the formula and supports:
-
Throat comfort and smoothness
-
Gentle detoxification
-
Harmonizing the blend so all ingredients work together effectively
Licorice root also lends a natural sweetness, softening the taste and experience of the tisane.
Together, they offer comfort, clarity, and care — whether you're performing, teaching, or simply speaking more than usual.
qìsane at Carnegie Hall
Last month, qìsane’s peppermint & loquat tisane was included in the green rooms at the Patti Smith Tribute Concert at Carnegie Hall. The team curating the backstage care packages mentioned that Patti often drinks peppermint and loquat-based teas to support her voice. While she may not have tried our blend before the event, it felt meaningful to be part of that evening. We were happy to be able to provide a quiet moment of care behind the scenes.
Artists like Bruce Springsteen, Michael Stipe, Matt Berninger and Karen O were part of the lineup. It was an intimate, powerful night — and we were honored to have our tisane included as part of the performers’ backstage rituals.
For Anyone Who Uses Their Voice
This blend isn’t just for singers. It’s for anyone who relies on their voice — whether you speak on stage or in a classroom, in meetings or at home. It’s a gentle daily support for your throat and lungs, made with respect for tradition and designed for modern life.
