What is the difference between chamomile tea and Chinese herbal tea for sleep?

Chamomile works by binding to GABA receptors in the brain, producing a mild sedative effect similar in mechanism, though much weaker, to anti-anxiety medication. It reduces nervous system activity broadly. Chinese herbal sleep teas take a different approach: rather than suppressing activity, they aim to address underlying imbalances that make rest difficult. In TCM, difficulty sleeping is often linked to excess internal heat or depletion of yin, causing a wired, restless state even when the body is physically tired. Herbs like chrysanthemum flower cool that internal heat; jujube calms the mind; longan nourishes what TCM calls the heart blood. Neither approach is universally better, but for people who have tried chamomile and found it mildly pleasant but not particularly effective, the TCM framing may be a closer match to what is actually happening.
